July 28 airpower summary: A-10s strike enemy targets

Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations July 28, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles fired cannon rounds onto anti-Afghan forces near Qarah Bagh. The on-scene joint terminal attack controller declared the mission was successful.

Near Kandahar, Royal Air Force GR-7 Harriers dropped a 540-pound free fall bomb, an Enhanced Paveway II munitions, and fired rockets onto enemy forces engaging coalition forces. A JTAC confirmed the mission successful.

An RAF GR-7 Harrier dropped EPII munitions onto enemy forces engaging friendly forces in the vicinity of Now Zad. The mission was reported successful by a JTAC.

In the vicinity of Tarin Kowt, an Air Force B-1B Lancer dropped guided bomb unit-38s onto an enemy compound. A JTAC declared the mission successful.

Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs dropped general-purpose 500-pound bombs onto anti-Afghan rocket teams near Worzhanah Kalay. The mission was confirmed successful by a JTAC.

In the vicinity of Tarin Kowt, an F-15E dropped a GBU-38 onto an anti-Afghan compound where the enemy was engaging coalition forces. A JTAC reported the mission successful.

F-15Es dropped GBU-31s onto an anti-Afghan fighting position and cave firing onto friendly forces. The mission was declared successful by a JTAC.

A-10s performed a show of force to deter enemy activities near Bagram. A JTAC confirmed the mission successful.

RAF GR-7 Harriers conducted shows of force near Sangin to deter anti-Afghan activities. The missions were reported successful by JTACs.

F-15Es performed shows of force to deter enemy activities near Bagram and Garmsir and in the vicinity of Musa Qala. A JTACs declared the mission successful.

Navy F/A-18C Hornets conducted a show of force near Garmsir to deter anti-Afghan activities. The mission was confirmed successful by a JTAC.

In total, 78 close-air-support missions were flown as part of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Thirteen Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. Additionally, six Navy and RAF aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

In Iraq, coalition aircraft flew 48 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized with coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided overwatch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Twenty-five Air Force and Navy intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. Additionally, four Air Force and RAF aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and C-17 Globemasters IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa.

Approximately 135 airlift sorties were flown, 534 tons of cargo delivered and 2,321 passengers were transported. This included approximately 76,900 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Iraq, and Korea flew as part of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq.

On July 27, Air Force, French, and RAF aerial refueling crews flew 62 sorties and off-loaded approximately 3 million pounds of fuel to 224 receiving aircraft.
