Lean Week Charter Plan announced, promotes elimination of waste across board Published July 22, 2008 By Airman 1st Class Katie Hickerson 12th Flying Training Wing Public Affairs RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AFPN) -- Facilitators, team leads and unit managers are set to conduct Air Force Smart Operations 21 objectives at the Mission Support Group, Medical Group, Operations Group and Maintenance Directorate within the12th Flying Training Wing. Randolph Air Force Base has scheduled the Lean Week initiative for Monday through May 23. "This process was designed to develop a culture which promotes elimination of waste, a sharing of best practices and a reduction of cycle times across all products and services," James Grobe, 12th Logistics Readiness Division deputy director and 12th FTW certified facilitator, said. "We want to ensure all Airmen understand their role and continuously learn new ways to improve processes in their daily activities." Specific areas of review during Lean Week: Mission Support Group -- Problem/Opportunity Statement Current format for the Base INTRO Program is too long and may consist of briefings that are not needed -- Impact Statement An informative, concise INTRO Program will facilitate member integration into our community thus expedite their combat readiness. -- Project Scope Convene a working group of all briefers to: compare Randolph INTRO Program with at least 3 other randomly selected AF installations; assess the feasibility of condensing required briefings; altering format of others and streamline accordingly. Medical Group -- Problem/Opportunity Statement The dispensing process from when the patient checks in to when the prescription is actually picked up causes patient confusion and extra wait time. -- Impact Statement Reduce patient wait time, streamline dispensing process, decrease confusion. -- Project Scope In Scope: Patient check in, pharmacy medication processing, prescription dispensing Out of Scope: Provider order entry, decrease quality Operations Group -- Problem/Opportunity Statement Inherent inefficiencies exist in T-43 sortie (4.0 hrs) and duty day duration. -- Impact Statement Extensive fuel savings can be achieved, efficiencies in duty day as well as potential increase in instructor performance/effectiveness can be achieved without mission degradation. -- Project Scope In Scope: Required flight hours to achieve CSO training objectives, Flying hour program. Out of Scope:T-43 IP currencies, student training syllabus Maintenance Directorate -- Problem/Opportunity Statement Provide a Centralized Aircraft Support System Installation for the T-38C aircraft under BRAC funding boundaries -- Impact Statement The overall funding cost to install a CASS System to support the T-38C IFF project was in excess of $1.8M. The excavation of the road and ramp concrete along is extensive and beyond funding -- Project Scope Boundaries of this initiative are set by BRAC funding. Authority on this project is the research the cost, coordinate with base CE and finance advisors with base and AETC on funding thresholds. Project must come within estimated overall cost.
