U-2 nose art honors fallen Soldier Published July 18, 2008 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) -- Airmen added chalk art to a U-2 fuselage to honor the late brother of an Airman serving here as a crew chief July 14 at a Southwest Asian air base. The art was a tribute to Army Cpl. Gunnar W. Zwilling, 20, brother of Airman 1st Class Alexander Zwilling, who was deployed here as a member of the 99th Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron. Corporal Zwilling and eight other Soldiers supporting Operation Enduring Freedom died July 13 of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their outpost in Wanat, Afghanistan, with small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. They were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503d Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team from Vicenza, Italy. In addition to Corporal Zwilling, other Soldiers killed were: -- 1st Lt. Jonathan P. Brostrom, 24, of Hawaii. -- Sgt. Israel Garcia, 24, of Long Beach, Calif. -- Cpl. Jonathan R. Ayers, 24, of Snellville, Ga. -- Cpl. Jason M. Bogar, 25, of Seattle. -- Cpl. Jason D. Hovater, 24, of Clinton, Tenn. -- Cpl. Matthew B. Phillips, 27, of Jasper, Ga. -- Cpl. Pruitt A. Rainey, 22, of Haw River, N.C. -- Pfc. Sergio S. Abad, 21, of Morganfield, Ky. Airman Zwilling, who is regularly assigned to the 9th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Beale Air Force Base, Calif., helped launch a U-2 July 14 before heading home to his family in Florissant, Mo.
