July 13 airpower summary: A-10s fire on anti-Afghan forces

Coalition airpower integrated with Coalition ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations July 13, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, an Air Force B-1B Lancer dropped guided bomb unit 31s and 38s onto anti-Afghan fighting positions and anti-Afghan forces in the vicinity of Nangalam. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs fired cannon rounds and dropped a general purpose 500-pound bomb and GBU-12s onto anti-Afghan forces. Additionally, an Air Force MQ-1 Predator fired a Hellfire missile onto anti-Afghan forces. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle conducted a show of force to deter anti-Afghan activities. The mission was confirmed successful by an on-scene joint terminal attack controller.

In the vicinity of Kandahar, Navy F/A-18E Super Hornets dropped GBU-12 and 38s onto an enemy position. A JTAC declared the mission successful.

A B-1B dropped a GBU-31 and 38s onto enemy weapon caches in the vicinity of Worzhanah Kalay. The mission was reported successful by a JTAC.

In the vicinity of Eybak, an F-15E dropped a GBU-12 onto anti-Afghan forces. Furthermore, F-15Es performed shows of force to deter enemy activities. A JTAC confirmed the mission successful.

Navy F/A-18C Hornets fired cannon rounds and dropped GBU-12s onto an enemy compound in the vicinity of Kandahar. The mission was declared successful by a JTAC.

In the vicinity of Orgun-E, A-10s conducted shows of force to deter anti-Afghan activities. A JTAC reported the mission successful.

F/A-18Cs performed shows of force to deter enemy activities in the vicinity of Eybak, Gamsir and near Lakshkar Gah. The missions were confirmed successful by JTACs.

In the vicinity of Lakshkar Gah, F/A-18Es conducted a show of force to deter anti-Afghan activities. A JTAC declared the mission successful.

F-15Es performed shows of force to deter enemy activities near Kabul and in the vicinity of Bagtu and Shkin. The missions were reported successful by  JTACs.

In total, 60 close-air-support missions were flown as part of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Thirteen Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. Additionally, four Navy aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

In Iraq, coalition aircraft flew 46 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized with coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided overwatch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Twenty-seven Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. Additionally, four Air Force and Royal Air Force aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance. 

Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa.

Approximately 132 airlift sorties were flown, 425 tons of cargo delivered and 3,034 passengers were transported. This included approximately 103,480 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada, Iraq, Japan and Korea flew as part of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq.

On July 12, Air Force, French and RAF tanker crews flew 62 sorties and off-loaded approximately 3.4 million pounds of fuel to 283 receiving aircraft.
