July 8 airpower summary: Reaper drops bomb on enemy Published July 9, 2008 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) -- Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations July 8, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here. In Afghanistan, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs fired cannon rounds onto enemy combatants in the vicinity of Kowtale. An on-scene joint terminal attack controller confirmed the mission successful. In the vicinity of Molla Ashraf, an Air Force MQ-9 Reaper dropped a guided bomb unit-12 onto enemy combatants. The mission was declared a success by a JTAC. An Air Force B-1B Lancer dropped GBU-38s onto enemy combatants and an enemy compound near Bagram. A JTAC reported the mission successful. In the vicinity of Now Zad, a Navy F/A18E Super Hornet and F/A18C Hornets dropped GBU-38s onto enemy combatants and an enemy compound. The missions were confirmed a success by a JTAC. F/A-18Es conducted shows of force to deter enemy activities near Gardez. A JTAC declared the missions successful. A-10s performed shows of force to deter anti-Afghan activities near Gardez. The missions were reported successful by a JTAC. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles conducted shows of force to deter enemy activities in the vicinity of Tarin Kowt and near Gardez. JTACs confirmed the missions successful. Near Gardez, French 2000 Mirages performed shows of force to deter anti-Afghan activities. In total, 74 close-air-support missions were flown as part of the ISAF and Afghan National Security Forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols. Eighteen Air Force, Navy and Royal Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. Additionally, two RAF aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance. In Iraq, coalition aircraft flew 27 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized with coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided overwatch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities. Twenty-four Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. Additionally, two Air Force aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance. Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. Approximately 137 airlift sorties were flown, 522 tons of cargo delivered and 3,549 passengers were transported. This included approximately 57,400 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in Afghanistan. Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada, Iraq, Japan and Korea flew as part of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq. On July 7, Air Force and RAF tanker crews flew 52 sorties and off-loaded approximately 2.7 million pounds of fuel to 202 receiving aircraft.
