July 1 airpower summary: A-10 destroys anti-Afghan forces

Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations July 1, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, an Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II and an F-15E Strike Eagle dropped a guided bomb unit-31 and a 500-pound bomb to destroy anti-Afghan forces in the vicinity of Bari Kowt. In addition, an A-10 performed a show of force to deter any additional enemy activities. An on-scene joint terminal attack controller confirmed the missions successful.

An Air Force Predator fired a Hellfire missile to destroy armed enemy insurgents in the vicinity of Kandahar. A JTAC reported the mission successful.

An Air Force B-1B Lancer dropped GBU-31s and 38s to destroy rocket positions in the vicinity of Gereshk. A JTAC declared the mission successful. 

In the vicinity of Sar Hawzeh, A-10s dropped GBU-12s and a 500-pound bomb to destroy a command and control high value target and enemy rocket positions. A JTAC confirmed the mission successful. 

Air Force F-15Es performed shows of force to deter enemy activities in the vicinity of Bagram, Gardez and Golestan. JTACs reported the missions successful. 

French 2000 Mirages performed shows of force to deter enemy activities in the vicinity of Sangin and Tarin Kowt. JTACs declared the missions successful.

In the vicinity of Sharona, A-10s performed shows of force to deter enemy activities. A JTAC confirmed the mission successful.

In total, 59 close-air-support missions were flown as part of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Twelve Air Force and Royal Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. Additionally, two RAF aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

In Iraq, coalition aircraft flew 23 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized with coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided overwatch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Twenty-four Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. Additionally, six Navy and RAF aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance. 

Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Iraq and Japan flew as part of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq.

On June 30, Air Force, French and RAF tanker crews flew 60 sorties and off-loaded approximately 3 million pounds of fuel to 229 receiving aircraft.
