Air Force honored with environmental awards

The Air Force was recently honored with several environmental awards for its efforts in ecological responsibility.

The recipients of the 2007 Secretary of Defense Environmental Awards were:

- Hill Air Force Base, Utah, -- Environmental Quality Individual/Team category
- Robins AFB, Ga., -- Pollution Prevention Industrial Installation category
- Seymour Johnson AFB, N.C., -- Environmental Restoration Installation category
- Fairchild AFB, Wash., -- Environmental Excellence in Weapon Systems Acquisition Team category

The winners were honored in the Pentagon Center Courtyard June 4.

In addition, several Air Force installations were recognized in military categories in the White House Closing the Circle Awards June 10.

- Robins AFB -- Environmental management systems
- Vandenberg AFB, Calif., -- Waste/pollution prevention

Honorable mentions included:

- Charleston AFB, S.C., -- Environmental management systems
- Fairchild AFB -- Alternative fuel and fuel conservation in transportation
- Robins AFB -- Green purchasing

"The Air Force is dedicated to improving our natural infrastructure, which is a critical part of providing a solid platform for our Air Force installations," said Maj. Gen. Del Eulberg, the Air Force Civil Engineer. "The success of the installations highlighted today demonstrates the Air Force's commitment to be the environmental leader in the Department of Defense and the Air Force's commitment to protect our planet with as much passion as we protect its freedom."
