June 5 airpower summary: A-10s strike enemy locations

SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) --  Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations June 5, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, a Royal Air Force GR-9 Harrier dropped Enhanced Paveway II munitions onto an enemy building in Garmsir. An on-scene joint terminal attack controller declared the mission a success.

An Air Force MQ-9 Reaper dropped a guided bomb unit-12 onto enemy combatants in the vicinity of Sangin. Furthermore, an Air Force B-1B Lancer dropped GBU-31s and GBU-38s onto enemy positions in the area. The missions were reported as successful by a JTAC. 

An Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II fired cannon rounds onto enemy combatants successfully eliminating the targets in Zormat.

In the vicinity of Orgune, A-10s fired rockets and cannon rounds onto enemy locations and performed a show of force in the area in order to deter enemy activities. A JTAC confirmed the missions as successful. 

An A-10 dropped GBU-12s onto an enemy combatant firing position in Bermel. The mission was declared successful by a JTAC.

Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles conducted shows of force in order to deter enemy activities in Bermel and Orgune. A JTAC reported the missions as successful. 

A RAF GR-7 Harrier dropped a general purpose 540-pound bomb and fired rockets onto enemy locations in Qalat. The mission was confirmed as a success by a JTAC.

In Bagram, A-10s fired cannon rounds onto enemy combatants in the area. Furthermore, an A-10 performed shows of force in order to deter enemy activities in the area. A JTAC declared the missions successful.

In total, 52 close-air-support missions were flown as part of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Eleven Air Force and RAF intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. Additionally, two RAF aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

In Iraq, Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons dropped GBU-38s onto an enemy location successfully destroying the target.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 52 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided overwatch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Twenty-two Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. Additionally, four Air Force and RAF aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance. 

Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa.

Approximately 133 airlift sorties were flown, 232 tons of cargo delivered and 2,654 passengers were transported. This included approximately 90,000 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada and Iraq flew as part of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq.

On June 4, Air Force, French, RAF and Singaporean aerial refueling crews flew 60 sorties and off-loaded approximately 3.3 million pounds of fuel to 282 receiving aircraft.
