May 29 airpower summary: C-130s transport troops Published May 30, 2008 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) -- Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations May 29, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here. In Afghanistan, Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles conducted shows of force in order to deter enemy activities against coalition forces in Bermel. An on-scene joint terminal attack controller declared the missions successful. In Sangin, French 2000 Mirages dropped guided bomb unit-12s onto enemy locations. The missions were reported as successful by a JTAC. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs fired cannon rounds and dropped a general-purpose 500-pound bomb onto enemy combatants in the vicinity of Nangalam. A JTAC confirmed the mission as a success. An Air Force B-1B Lancer dropped GBU-31s and GBU-38s onto enemy combatant firing positions and a disabled vehicle in Farah. The mission was declared successful by a JTAC. A Royal Air Force GR-9 Harrier performed a show of force in order to deter enemy activities against coalition forces in Farah. A JTAC reported the mission as a success. An F-15E dropped a GBU-31 onto an enemy position in Bagram. The mission was confirmed as a success by the JTAC. An Air Force MQ-9A Reaper dropped a GBU-12 onto enemy combatants in Kabul. The JTAC declared the mission as success. In Bermel and Orgune, A-10s conducted shows of force in order to deter enemy activities in the area. The missions were reported as successful by a JTAC. Royal Air Force GR-7 Harriers performed shows of force over enemy positions in Now Zad. A JTAC confirmed the missions as successful. In total, 56 close-air-support missions were flown as part of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols. Fourteen Air Force and RAF intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. Additionally, two RAF aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance. In Iraq, coalition aircraft flew 69 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided overwatch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities. Twenty-six Air Force, Navy and Royal Australian Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. Additionally, eight Air Force, Navy and RAF aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance. Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. Approximately 128 airlift sorties were flown, 578 tons of cargo delivered and 2,544 passengers were transported. This included approximately 33,000 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in Afghanistan. Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada, Japan, and Korea flew as part of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq. On May 28, Air Force, French and RAF tanker crews flew 54 sorties and off-loaded approximately 2.9 million pounds of fuel to 220 receiving aircraft.
