Several key dates are quickly approaching for people interested in running in the 2008 U.S. Air Force Marathon here.

Participants can save money by registering early; the first deadline for savings is May 31. Early registration will help the marathon staff better plan for the event.

"People can register right up until the day before the event, which is scheduled for Sept. 20, if the event is not sold out at 10,000 runners," said Molly Louden, the race director. "But in order to save money, up to $30 in many cases, runners need to register by the end of this month."

Runners can sign up online at http://www.usafmarathon.com. Complete details can be found on the marathon Web site or by calling 1-800-467-1823.

This year's event features the main marathon (with a wheeled marathon division), a half-marathon, a 10 kilometer individual and four-person team and a 5k races. All are held Sept. 20 except the 5k which takes place at Wright State University on Sept. 19.

"Registration for the marathon is $65 right now and will increase throughout the summer, " Ms. Louden said, "but if you wait until September the price goes up to $95. Similarly, the 10k price goes from $35 now to $60 later.

"The more we know about the number of people attending, the better we can provide an exciting and memorable marathon for everyone involved," she said.

In addition to the marathon and associated running events, a Sports & Fitness Exposition is set for Sept. 18 and 19 at the Ervin J. Nutter Center at Wright State University. All race and expo events are open to the public.

This is the 12th running of the U.S. Air Force Marathon, which was created to help commemorate the founding of the Air Force as a separate military service on Sept. 18, 1947.
