Officials announce 2007 Thomas Jefferson Award winners Published May 1, 2008 SAN ANTONIO (AFPN) -- Officials at the American Forces Information Service and the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs recently announced the winners of the 2007 Thomas Jefferson Awards. The Thomas Jefferson Awards program, named after the nation's third president and author of the Declaration of Independence, recognizes military and civilian employee print and broadcast journalists for outstanding achievements in furthering the objectives of the Department of Defense Internal Information Program. Prior to the annual award contest, representatives of each service judge that service's entries and select the best entry in each category to represent that service in the final inter-service competition. Judges are professionals from the civilian broadcast and print journalism fields. Air Force winners in the broadcast category this year are: - Broadcast Journalist of the Year: Staff Sgt. Nicholas Kurtz, Air Force News Agency, Detachment 10, Yokota Air Base, Japan - Radio Entertainment Program: Staff Sgt. Trevor Pedro, American Forces Network, Naples, Italy - Radio Newscast: Headquarters, AFNews, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas - Television Feature Report: Staff Sgt. Christy Byers, AFN, Iraq - Television Sports Report: Staff Sgt. Nicholas Kurtz, AFN, Tokyo, Japan - Television News Report: AFNews, Det 9, Spandahlem AB, Germany Air Force winners in the print category are: - Photojournalism: Staff Sgt. Daniel Bellis, AFNews, Det 4, Ramstein AB, Germany - Commentary: George Woodward, 82nd Training Wing Public Affairs, Sheppard AFB, Texas - Series: Tech. Sgt. Leo Brown, 442nd Fighter Wing Public Affairs, Whiteman AFB, Mo. - Stand Alone Photograph: Staff Sgt. Stacia Zachary, 96th Air Base Wing Public Affairs, Eglin AFB, Fla. Winners will be recognized at the Department of Defense Communicators of Excellence Award Ceremony May 16.
