Miami beats Air Force, 3-2, in overtime in NCAA tourney Published April 1, 2008 WORCESTER, Mass. (AFPN) -- Miami's Justin Mercier scored with just under five minutes remaining in overtime to lift the top-seeded RedHawks past fourth-seeded Air Force, 3-2, in the semifinals of the NCAA Northeast Regional at the DCU Center, March 29, in Worcester, Mass. Miami got on the board quickly on the first shift of the game. Freshman Tommy Wingels scored 19 seconds into the game on a 2-on-1 rush. Wingels skated down the left side and took a wrister from the left circle that beat Andrew Volkening. After that the game was very even as each team had eight shots after the Miami goal. Each team had one power play in the period and was unable to convert. Jeff Zatkoff and Volkening each had eight saves in the game. Air Force not only tied the game in the second period, but took the lead. Freshman Derrick Burnett tied the game at the 3:21 mark with his seventh of the season. Jeff Hajner won a faceoff in the offensive end and Burnett stuffed the rebound past Zatkoff to tie the game at 1-1. Five minutes later, the Falcons took the lead on senior Josh Print's first goal of the season. The often-injured senior winger started the rush as he split two RedHawk defensemen at the blue line. From his linemates, Scott Kozlak and Blake Page, Print scored from right in front of the net for a 2-1 lead at the 8:34 mark. The Falcons held the one-goal lead until midway through the third period. After a penalty for too many men on the ice on Air Force, Miami capitalized when Carter Campier scored at the 13:44 mark to tie the game at 2-2. The game remained tied at 2-2 and went into overtime, the first overtime game this season in the NCAA Tournament. Miami had a power play midway through overtime, but Air Force killed it off. Then, late in the overtime period, Mercier skated down the right side and his wrister beat Volkening for the game-winner at 15:21. Air Force finished the 2007-08 season with a 21-12-6 record, a school record for Division I wins in a season.
