Pope officials remember fallen Airman

Pope Air Force Base members paid their respects to an NCO who died March 22 fighting the war on terrorism during a March 26 memorial ceremony at Hangar 4 here. 

Tech. Sgt. William H. Jefferson Jr., 34, from the 21st Special Tactics Squadron died from wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device near Sperwan Ghar, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

He began his military career as a Marine in 1992, then joined the Air Force in 1996. He was stationed at Pope AFB for his entire career as a combat controller. 

Col. Marc Stratton, the 720th Special Tactics Group commander, spoke during the memorial ceremony for Sergeant Jefferson. Many base members and fellow combat controllers were on hand to pay their respects.
