Gymnastics: Falcons defeat Alaska Anchorage

Highlighted by two event victories from junior Abigail Rogers, the U.S. Air Force Academy women's gymnastics team claimed the for its second victory of the season with a 190.975 to 190.250 win over the University of Alaska Anchorage March 16 here.

Improving their season-high mark by more than six points during the course of the season, the 190.975 score is the best Air Force combined score since the 2005 season.

Rogers posted first-place finishes on the balance beam and floor exercise, en route to a winning total on the all-around. Rogers improved her overall total on beam to win the event with a mark of 9.700 -- a score .100 better than the rest of the field. She also bettered the field by .100 to win the floor exercise, earning a score of 9.825.

In addition, Rogers' winning all-around score of 38.825 was a personal improvement by .500.

Rogers also tied with freshman Brittany Dutton for the Falcons' top finish on the vault. The duo posted totals of 9.650 to take second on that event. Sophomore Michelle Denise paced the Falcons on the uneven bars, as she finished third with a season-best 9.675.

Dutton and Denise finished second and third, respectively, in the all-around. Dutton posted a score of 38.350 to take second, while Denise improved her season-best score to a third-place mark of 38.325. Contributing to Denise's total was a second-place finish on the floor (9.725) and a top-six finish on the beam (9.500).

The Falcons also earned six other finishes within the top half of the field. Dutton and classmate Lisa Wong tied for third on the beam with a 9.575 score, while Rogers and Dutton finished fourth with 9.650 and sixth with 9.600, respectively, on the uneven bars. Senior Kelly Lewis added two top-six finishes, placing fourth on the vault with a mark of 9.625 and fifth on the floor with a score of 9.575.

The Academy closes out the regular season March 24 against the University of Denver in the Cadet West Gym in Colorado Springs, Colo.
