Baseball: Cadet named conference pitcher of the week

  • Published
A U.S. Air Force Academy freshman baseball player here was named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week recently by conference officials.

This is the first career weekly honor for left-hander Brad Pingel, who went 1-0 and led the Air Force pitching staff with a 1.59 ERA in 5.2 innings pitched in three relief appearances for the week.

In a 5-3, 10-inning win over Northern Colorado, the St. Louis native came on in the seventh inning and struck out back-to-back batters with the bases loaded to get out of the inning unscathed as the Falcons rallied for their first win of the season.

In the first game of a two-game series vs. Mississippi State, Pingel hurled one inning, giving up one hit and no runs in a 3-1 loss. In game two, Pingel picked up the win, marking the first time ever the Academy defeated a Southeastern Conference opponent. In 3.2 innings of relief work, he gave up two runs (one earned run) on four hits, while striking out four.

The Air Force returns to action March 6 taking on Maine at the Papa John's Palm Beach Challenge in Palm Beach, Fla.
