Feb. 12 airpower summary: A-10s destroy enemy targets

Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations Feb. 12, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs and French Mirage 2000s dropped guided bomb unit-12s and 500lb bombs in order to destroy enemy buildings and a compound in Deh Rawod. An on-scene joint terminal attack controller confirmed that the missions were successful.

In Nangalam, Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles dropped GBU-38s in order to destroy enemy combatant firing positions. A JTAC reported that the missions were successful. 

In Orgune, an Air Force B-1B Lancer, an A-10 Thunderbolt II and F-15E Strike Eagles performed shows of force in order to deter enemy activities. The missions were declared successful by a JTAC. 

In order to deter enemy activities a show of force was performed by an A-10 in Gereshk. The success of the mission was confirmed by a JTAC.

In Bari Kowt, an F-15E performed a show of force in order to deter enemy activities. A JTAC reported that the mission was successful.

In total, 43 close-air-support missions were flown as part of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Ten Air Force and Royal Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. Additionally, two RAF aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

In Iraq, an Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon dropped GBU-38s in order to destroy enemy combatants in an enemy structure in Baqubah. In addition an F-16 performed a show of force in order to deter any further enemy activities. The missions were declared successful by a JTAC.

In order to deter enemy activities Navy F/A-18 Hornets performed shows of force. The missions were confirmed successful by a JTAC.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 60 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided overwatch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Twenty-four Air Force and Navy intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. Additionally, Navy aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance. 

Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa.

Approximately 127 airlift sorties were flown, 552 tons of cargo were delivered and 2,841 passengers were transported. This included approximately 29,300 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada, Iraq and Japan flew as part of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq.

On Feb. 11, Air Force and RAF tanker crews flew 37 sorties and off-loaded approximately 2.6 million pounds of fuel to 206 receiving aircraft.
