Heritage to Horizons series highlights AF Flight Test Center

  • Published
The latest Heritage to Horizons series presentation highlights the de facto center of American flight research, development, test and evaluation.

The Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., began operations June 25, 1951, and had a solid foundation on which to build its mission as more than 40 different types of aircraft flew their first flight at the base. Over the years, its core mission has remained unchanged: to conduct and support flight research, development, and test and evaluation of aerospace systems from concept to combat.

The Heritage to Horizons spotlight takes a closer look at the center's contributions to airpower through a series of articles highlighting the mission and prestigious history as well as its vital role in some of today's emerging technologies. The spotlight also has vintage film footage of the first jet flight as well as cockpit and aerial footage of Capt. Charles "Chuck" Yeager's record-breaking flight Oct. 17, 1947.
