CSAF's Scope highlights Brig. Gen. Paul W. Tibbets Jr.

  • Published
The CSAF's Scope focuses on current topics the Air Force chief of staff feels are of special importance to today's Airmen.

Among Gen. T. Michael Moseley's top issues is the recent death of Brig. Gen. Paul W. Tibbets Jr., the pilot of the famous Enola Gay.

"We all know General Tibbets as the pilot of the Enola Gay when it dropped the first atomic weapon on Imperial Japan, but there's more to the man and his legacy for us to consider," General Moseley said. He was a warrior that always led from the front.

"He piloted the lead bomber on the first Eighth Air Force bombing mission in Europe on 17 August 1942, later led the first heavy bombardment mission in conjunction with the invasion of North Africa, and commanded the 12-man crew of the Enola Gay on its courageous mission over Hiroshima in August 1945," General Moseley said. "This single sortie opened a new chapter in air power. It established air power as America's strategic sword and shield by clearly demonstrating air power's ability to hold targets at risk anywhere in the world."

Other topics on the CSAF's Scope include maintenance units and survival, evasion, resistance and escape training. The general has written a brief explanation of each topic so Airmen can better understand the issues he is working and why they are important to the Air Force's senior leaders.

The CSAF's Scope is available on the Air Force official Web site at http://www.af.mil/library/cscope.asp.
