Nov. 24 airpower summary: A-10 Thunderbolts on target

Coalition airpower supported coalition ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force troops in Afghanistan during operations Nov. 24, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, an Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle conducted a show of force with flares to deter enemy activities in Orgune. In conjunction with the show of force, the mission provided security to a coalition convoy moving through the area. The on-scene joint terminal attack controller declared the mission was successful.

Enemy mortar teams in Oruzgan were struck with guided bomb unit-31s from an Air Force B-1B Lancer. The strike hit its intended target.

Shows of force with flares were carried out by a B-1B to deter enemy activities in Musa Qal'eh.

A GBU-12 from an Air Force MQ-9A Reaper struck enemy combatants in Gardez. Additionally, an Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II and F-15Es aided the same strike with GBU-12s and GBU-38s. The JTAC declared the missions was successful.

In total, 37 close-air-support-missions were flown in support of ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Nine Air Force and Royal Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.

In Iraq, an Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon performed a show of force to deter enemy activities against a coalition convoy in Mosul. The mission achieved the desired effect.

Shows of force with flares were conducted in Ad Diwaniyah and Al Kut by Navy F-18C Hornets. The demonstrations deterred enemy activities to include actions by improvised explosive device teams.

F-16s successfully conducted shows of force with flares to deter enemy IED teams in Al Amarah.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 59 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions supported coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided over watch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Twenty-six Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. Additionally, four Navy aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa.

Some 148 airlift sorties were flown, 552 tons of cargo were delivered and 3,068 passengers were transported. Airlift included approximately 26,480 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada, Iraq and Korea flew in support of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq.

On Nov. 23, Air Force, French and RAF tankers flew 43 sorties and off-loaded approximately 3.0 million pounds of fuel to 244 receiving aircraft.
