More than 200 children received their official tasking and prepared for a mock deployment at Hangar 1here Oct. 24.

The day-long deployment began with the young warriors in-processing and picking up their air and space expeditionary force cards, helmets and web belts. Immediately after suiting up, they formed up and learned how to march.

Highlights of the day included sitting in an F-16 Fighting Falcon, wearing an explosive ordnance disposal blast suit, and learning how to use an attack hose and extinguishing a controlled fire. The children also watched a military working dog demonstration and made a call home to mom and dad using satellite communication equipment.

"The purpose of this event is for the children in the Aviano Elementary and Middle School to better understand how their parents deploy," said Master Sgt. Delana Jemison, 31st Logistics Readiness Squadron.

More than 60 volunteers and 10 organizations helped accomplish that goal by providing logistical and in-processing support to the children.

When asked how he liked the deployment, Jacob Calderon gave an enthusiastic two thumbs up.

"I liked learning how to put out a fire," Jacob said. "I know I could extinguish a fire and call 911 now if I needed to."

"Our goal was for the children to have fun," Sergeant Jemison said. "As a bonus, we hope they learned a little more about the jobs their parents do in the Air Force."

Most importantly, Sergeant Jemison hopes the program leaves the children feeling confident in knowing their parents are safe, trained, supported and protected.
