Air University officials here in September released the inaugural issue of Strategic Studies Quarterly to help meet Air Force chief of staff's vision of injecting air, space and cyberspace perspectives into the intellectual battle space.

"We must ensure our warfighting future," Gen. T. Michael Moseley's said in the introduction of the first issue.

The Strategic Studies Quarterly serves as a forum for the critical examination of and debate about contemporary national defense topics and invites authors to share their perspectives on strategic issues, said Dr. Anthony Cain, the editor-in-chief. The journal contributes to this imperative by helping to develop relationships and facilitating the exchange of ideas that will prepare the Air Force to confront the challenges facing the nation during these uncertain times.

Efforts to establish Strategic Studies Quarterly began more than a year ago when General Moseley approved the concept. The journal's staff was in place by January 2007, and began collecting articles and book reviews to include in the first edition of the publication.

The journal is seeking to bring together a community of critical thinkers who already work in separate intellectual communities in the nation and across the world, Dr. Cain said. Strategic Studies Quarterly is available to Air Force commanders and senior leaders, members of Congress, government decision makers and key scholars in think tanks and universities throughout the country.

"The impetus is to find new ways to view problems, to access new information and perspectives and to combine our knowledge and methods toward a common purpose to advance our progress toward a common security goal," Dr. Cain said. "It will add to the existing quantity and quality of informed opinions. Thus, our senior military and civilian leaders, and those who work for them, will be better equipped to make decisions."

He said he sees Strategic Studies Quarterly succeeding to the degree that readers and contributors connect with people they would never have thought to seek out if not for the opportunity the publication provides.

"As the security environment evolves, the United States and its allies will need new ways to sustain the effects that contribute to lasting success," Dr. Cain said. "Strategic Studies Quarterly should provide opportunities for those new approaches."

He said the staff at Air University is also distributing Strategic Studies Quarterly through a free electronic subscription service on Air Force Link at www.af.mil/subscribe/.  About 1,400 people from around the world already subscribe to the journal via e-mail. Readers can also download the complete text or individual articles at www.maxwell.af.mil/au/ssq/index.asp.

People interested in contributing to the journal can e-mail their 5,000- to 15,000-word articles for consideration, in Microsoft Word-compatible format, to strategicstudiesquarterly@maxwell.af.mil or mail to: Managing Editor, Strategic Studies Quarterly, Air War College, 325 Chennault Circle, Maxwell AFB, AL 36112-6427.
