The Air Force chief of staff has approved the latest revision to Air Force Doctrine Document 2-8, Command and Control.

Gen. T. Michael Moseley endorsed AFDD 2-8 as one of 10 Air Force keystone documents.

AFDD 2-8 provides guidance on command and control, or C2, operations to support national military objectives, and directs commanders in employing Air Force forces across the full range of military operations.

A global C2 system adequately supports the secretary of the Defense Department and the geographic combatant commanders in executing operations. This publication also describes theater C2 systems, which include unique systems supporting mobility, space and cyber operations.

Military operations in the 21st century continue to grow in complexity and require close coordination to be capable. A robust C2 system allows efficient and effective coordination of all functions Airmen can bring to bear on an operation.

"Even though we perform command and control better then anyone else, we are never satisfied. This document keeps pace with our state-of-the-art command and control technology and processes," said Maj. Gen. Allen G. Peck, the commander of the Air Force Doctrine Center. "Airmen need to be knowledgeable in the latest principles and tenets of C2 in employing forces."

This revision updates key C2 doctrine concepts to include a discussion of net-centric operations, distributed and reachback operations, and threats to effective C2 of forces. It presents C2 of forces through both an administrative and an operational structure and adds a discussion of the Air Force's current cyberspace force C2 structure.
