U.S. Coast Guard celebrates 217 years of service Published Aug. 3, 2007 WASHINGTON (AFPN) -- The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Peter Pace congratulates the U.S. Coast Guard on its 217 years of service. "On Aug. 4, the United States Coast Guard celebrates 217 years of superb service to our nation. Since your inception in 1790 as the Revenue Cutter Service, the Coast Guard has gone through many transformations, yet always remained focused on the defense of our homeland. Today you continue to play a pivotal role in protecting our harbors, ports and coastlines. Americans sleep easier at night knowing you bring a standard of excellence to each of your missions -- maritime safety, security, mobility, national defense, and protection of our natural resources. Whether braving high seas to rescue boaters in distress, or boarding vessels to protect us from illegal cargo entering our ports, your exemplary performance embodies the Coast Guard motto of Semper Paratus ... always ready! The Joint Chiefs join me in wishing the men and women of the Coast Guard a happy birthday and commend you and your families for your diligent and faithful service."
