Assisted living residence gets perfect inspection score

  • Published
The staff at Hawthorn House, the Air Force Enlisted Village's assisted living residence, recently earned a perfect score during an inspection by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration.

As one of the four official charities of the Air Force, the Air Force Enlisted Village provides a home for the surviving spouses of enlisted military members at three locations in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.: Hawthorn House, Bob Hope Village and Teresa Village.

As an assisted living facility, Hawthorn House is licensed and inspected by the state of Florida. An unannounced license renewal must be conducted at least every two years, and that time came for Hawthorn House when inspector Paula Faulkner arrived July 17.

For two days Ms. Faulkner inspected the facility, validating some of the "hundreds" of state requirements for assisted living facilities, said Glenn Yost, Hawthorn House administrator .

"The requirements cover ever aspect of an ALF's operation," Mr. Yost said. "Inspectors look at paperwork, the food service operation, medications, even things like whether the walls are painted or the floors are scuffed."

Even with this intense scrutiny, the Hawthorn House came through with flying colors. There were no citations issued and the inspector didn't even list any areas that could be improved, said Jim Binnicker, Air Force Enlisted Village president and CEO.

"We're all very proud of this achievement," Mr. Binnicker said. "Hawthorn House is a premier assisted living residence, and it should be. Our enlisted surviving spouses deserve a place as nice as this."
