Heritage to Horizons series highlights 50th Space Wing Published June 20, 2007 SAN ANTONIO (AFPN) -- The latest Heritage to Horizons series presentation highlights an Air Force wing whose mission first called for mastery of the skies and has grown to master of space. Today, the 50th Space Wing at Schriever Air Force Base, Colo., is responsible for the operations and support of more than 170 Department of Defense satellites, to include Global Positioning System, or GPS, and Milstar Satellite Communications System. As a component of Air Force Space Command, it delivers combat power from space for America and its allies. However, long before military leaders were looking to the stars and considering the strategic opportunities available through space, the 50th SW and its 50th Pursuit Group predecessors trace their mastery of the skies and beyond to 1941 when crews flew fighter, escort and bombing missions during World War II and played a part in the D-Day invasion and Battle of the Bulge. The Heritage to Horizons spotlight takes a closer look at the wing's contributions to air power through a series of articles highlighting the wing's mission and prestigious history and well as its vital role in some of today's emerging technologies.
