CSAF's Scope focuses on new medal, training

The CSAF's Scope focuses on current topics the Air Force chief of staff feels are of special importance to today's Airmen.

This month, Gen. T. Michael Moseley's top issues include the Air Force's Combat Action Medal and ancillary training.

"Since 9/11, we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of Airmen engaged with or engaging hostile forces during performance of their duties," General Moseley said. "Many of them are fighting 'outside the wire' in non-traditional roles for Airmen, in addition to our Airmen flying and fighting in more classic Air Force roles."

"It is vital to recognize Airmen who epitomize the Air Force's 'Warrior Ethos,'" he said.  "We wanted an Air Force-specific award for our Airmen to wear proudly on their uniforms to serve as a visible reminder that combat is a fundamental part of being an Airman."

The Air Force's top Airman also addresses ancillary training.

"Over the years, (ancillary training has) expanded to a level that consumes a disproportionate amount of our Airmen's time and jeopardizes mission accomplishment," the chief of staff said. "In today's smaller yet more capable Air Force, our Airmen's time is at a premium. In fact, your time is critical. I intend to reverse the tide of ancillary training "creep," and give you some of that time back."
