Travis unit marks 8 years of being DUI free Published June 7, 2007 By Airman Kristen Rohrer 60th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AFPN) -- Airmen of the 6th Air Refueling Squadron at Travis Air Force Base recently marked their eighth year without a driving under the influence incident. "From the day an individual arrives at the squadron, friends and supervisors mentor (new arrivals) on our program," said Chief Master Sgt. Bruce Zahn, the 6th Air Refueling Squadron command chief. "That's eight years of Christmas and New Year's Eve parties, Fourth of July's and 808 plus Critical Days of Summer," the chief said. The squadron has a 'no questions asked' policy for anyone who finds themselves in a situation where they need a ride home," Chief Zahn said. In addition, the squadron also provides a designated driver program for all unit functions. The unit's booster club sponsors the program. There's not one particular person in charge of the 6th ARS DUI program, instead, each individual is an active part of the program and is key in the success of the program, Chief Zahn said. Because of the program's success, many lives have been saved during the past eight years. "If our efforts save one life, then the program has been successful. Their teamwork never ends when the work day ends, they are always trying to take care of each other," he said. "Every squadron member is open and receptive to monitoring and taking care of each other. Without the active participation of every squadron member this program would not be a success." "Eight years DUI free is certainly a tremendous accomplishment. I think if you had told the squadron eight years ago that this would happen, very few if any would have believed it was possible," said Lt. Col. Jim Craft, the 6th ARS commander. "The squadron owes a huge debt to the leaders at every level promoting an environment of smart choices where Airmen take care of Airmen."
