Preparing for unexpected keeps vacation worry-free Published June 4, 2007 By Airman 1st Class Priscilla Christensen Det. 8, Air Force News Agency AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy (AFPN) -- Many Airmen stationed overseas have family and friends travel thousands of miles to visit, but sometimes they forget to be ready for to the unexpected like a potential medical emergency. A quick check of a person's insurance and being prepared medically and financially can prevent a vacation turning into a burden. "When a family member comes to visit, they cannot use military medical facilities if they're not a Tricare beneficiary," said Patrice Aldaz. So if mom or grandpa has a medical emergency outside the U.S. and they're not covered by Tricare, they won't be able to use military medical facilities. Instead they'll have to pay out of pocket for care at a host nation facility or rely on their private healthcare insurance. But many insurance companies stop coverage once you cross the ocean. "Many people believe that Medicare will cover them overseas, but Medicare does not provide them with care while visiting military family or friends stationed overseas," Ms. Aldaz said. "There are no exceptions to that rule." This means visitors need to do some extra prep work like calling their insurance company to see what their options are. "It's important for travelers or tourists to carry their insurance card with them as proof of insurance, and to make sure they bring a claim form with them as well," Ms. Aldaz said. If visitors require medication, they should bring enough to last the length of their trip or they run the risk of trying to find it at a local pharmacy. Many private health insurance companies offer temporary travel insurance for family and friends during their short stay in Italy.
