Baseball: Air Force swept in doubleheader Published April 22, 2007 U.S. Air Force Academy SAN DIEGO, Calif. (AFNEWS) -- The Air Force baseball team (7-33, 0-14 MWC) was swept in a doubleheader by San Diego State (27-17, 11-4) April 22 at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Falcons lost the first game, 4-1, and then dropped the second game 31-0. The Aztecs won a 4-1 pitchers' duel in game one, as both teams scored no more than one run in an inning. SDSU starter Lance Sewell (5-3) out-pitched AFA starter Jake Petro (3-7), holding the Falcons to one run on five hits, while striking out nine in six innings. Stephen Stasburg picked up his seventh save of the year with a scoreless ninth. Petro kept the game close for the Falcons, allowing four runs off seven hits in seven strong innings. The sophomore right-hander walked three and struck out three. The Aztecs scored runs in the first three innings and added a fourth in the sixth inning. Air Force scored its run in the fifth. The Falcons were held to six hits, with Chay Derbigny and K.J. Randhawa both getting two hits apiece. San Diego State had eight hits in the game with Joe Spiers and Brandon Glover both going 2-for-3 with two runs each. In the second game, San Diego State scored runs in every inning except the third to blow out Air Force 31-0. The Aztecs put up 29 hits in the game, 11 for extra bases. Nine SDSU players had two-or-more hits. Frank LoNigro capped off a torrid-hitting weekend, going 5-for-6 with two home runs, six runs and six RBI. Spiers also had a huge game with four hits and a home run. LoNigro went 11-for-17 on the weekend with three homers and 13 RBI. Air Force was held to four hits in the game. Ben Ausbun, Josh Meents, Randhawa and Geno Salazar had the hits for the Falcons. Aztec starter J.R. Murphy (2-0) went seven innings, scattering three hits while striking out four for the win. Air Force starter Mike Ruvolo (0-5) went 1.1 innings, allowing seven runs. Ruvolo pitched in both games, giving him 26 appearances on the season, which ties the Mountain West Conference freshman record for pitching appearances in a season.
