Track and Field: Several cadets win at invitational

Senior thrower Olivia Korte had a stellar day of competition at the Oregon Invitational on Saturday, April 21. As one of seven Air Force track and field athletes competing at the prestigious meet in Eugene, Ore., Korte won the discus throw while also picking up a fourth-place throw in the shot put.

Korte set a NCAA Regional Qualifying Mark of 161'1" in the discus to out-distance herself from the competition by nearly eight feet. With one of the best throws in Academy history, Korte again only fell shy to her own program standard (set in 2005). In addition, she placed fourth in the shot put with a mark of 45'6¼".

Freshman Ally Romanko also had a strong showing at meet in her home state of Oregon. Crossing the finish line of the 800-meter run in 2:10.49, Romanko moved into third on the Academy's all-time list. That time is also a new Freshman Class record, displacing the mark she originally set during the indoor season.

Five men also competed at the Oregon Invitational. Junior Kevin Hawkins picked up their best finish with a ninth-place time of 1:50.97 in the 800-meter run. Classmate Calvin Glass timed in at 1:55.83 to finish 20th, while senior Richard Elmore placed 12th in the "B section" of that event with a time of 1:55.33.

Sophomore Daniel Castle ran the 1500-meter race ("B section") in 3:57.77 to take 14th, while junior Devin Hart recorded a long jump distance of 21'5½" to finish 10th in the Falcon's only field event of the day.

The continue split-squad action next week, as select members head to the prestigious Drake Relays on April 26-28 and the rest of the squad heads to Laramie, Wyo., for the Wyoming Invitational on April 28.
