CENTAF releases airpower summary for Jan. 27

SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFNEWS) --  U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials have released the airpower summary for Jan. 27.

In Afghanistan Jan. 26, a B-1B Lancer and Royal Air Force GR-7s provided close-air support for International Security Assistance Force troops in contact with enemy forces near Sangin. A GR-7 expended a guided bomb unit-16 on enemy positions.

In total, 23 close-air support missions were flown in support of ISAF and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Additionally, eight Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.

In Iraq , Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Al Iskandariyah. The F-16s expended a GBU-12 on enemy positions.

F-16s provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Al Mushahdah.

Air Force F-16s and A-10 Thunderbolt IIs provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Baghdad.

Royal Air Force GR-4s provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Baghdad Airport.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 46 close-air support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Additionally, 16 Air Force, Navy and Royal Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. Navy fighter aircraft performed in non-traditional ISR roles with their electro-optical and infrared sensors.

Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan , Iraq and the Horn of Africa. They flew more than 125 airlift sorties, delivered nearly 155 tons of cargo, and transported more than 3,350 passengers. This included about 16,800 pounds of troop re-supply airdropped in eastern Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews from Canada and South Korea flew in support of OIF or OEF.

On Jan. 25, Air Force, Royal Air Force and French Air Force tankers flew 27 sorties and off-loaded more than 1.8 million pounds of fuel.
