CENTAF releases airpower summary for Jan. 26

U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials have released the airpower summary for Jan. 26.

In Afghanistan Jan. 25, an Air Force B-1B Lancer conducted a strike on Taliban extremists near Musa Qal'eh. The bomber expended guided bomb unit-38s on enemy targets.

In total, 22 close-air-support missions were flown in support of Afghan and International Security Assistance Force troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Additionally, nine Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan .

In Iraq , Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Balad, Al Miqdadiyah, In Hawijah, Tikrit and Baghdad .

Royal Air Force GR-4 Tornados provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Al Iskandariyah.

Air Force F-16s and A-10 Thunderbolt IIs provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Al Mahmudiyah.

U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials agree that Airmen are hard at work, in the air and on the ground, in Iraq and Afghanistan . Whether they are flying combat support missions, dropping relief supplies, or driving convoy trucks, they are making a positive difference and bringing hope to millions in these two countries.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 50 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Additionally, 15 Air Force, Navy, RAF and Royal Australian Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq .

Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan , Iraq and the Horn of Africa. More than 140 airlift sorties were flown; more than 280 tons of cargo were delivered, and about 3,820 passengers were transported. This included more than 12,465 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in Afghanistan .

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia , Canada and Japan flew in support of OIF or OEF.

On Jan. 24, Air Force, RAF and French tankers flew 28 sorties and off-loaded more than 1.9 million pounds of fuel.
