CENTAF releases airpower summary for Jan. 15

U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials have released the airpower summary for Jan. 15.

In Afghanistan Jan. 14, an Air Force B-1 Lancer provided close-air support for International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF, troops in contact with enemy forces near Qurya. The B-1 expended guided bomb unit-31s and GBU-38s on enemy positions.

Coalition forces use a variety of precision-guided munitions to achieve the desired effects with minimal collateral damage.

In total, 27 close-air-support missions were flown in support of ISAF and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Additionally, six Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.

In Iraq, Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles conducted a strike against anti-Iraqi forces near Salma Pak. The F-15Es expended GBU-31s on enemy targets.

Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons also provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Miqdadiyah.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 32 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Additionally, 16 Air Force, Navy and Royal Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq.

Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. They flew 130 airlift sorties, delivered 340 tons of cargo and transported 3,050 passengers.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia and Canada flew in support of OIF or OEF.

On Jan. 13, U.S., RAF and French air force tankers flew 27 sorties and off-loaded about 1.6 million pounds of fuel.
