Matthew Rosine Air Force Print News SAN ANTONIO (AFPN) -- The United States Marine Corps celebrates its 231st birthday today. Originally founded on Nov. 10, 1775, the Marine Corps was composed many of infantrymen serving aboard Navy ships. They were primarily responsible for the security of the ship, offensive and defensive boarding parties. They also helped protect the ship's officers from mutiny. In 1921, Marine Gen. John A. Lejeune issued Marine Corps Order No. 47, Series 1921 that directed the history, traditions and mission of the Marine Corps be read to all Marines on Nov. 10 to honor the services creation. And in 1925, the first formal Marine Corps Birthday Ball was held in Philadelphia. Today, the Marines Corps is an amphibious expeditionary force that has three primary roles. -- The seizure or defense of advanced naval bases and other land operations to support naval campaigns -- The development of tactics, technique, and equipment used by amphibious landing forces, and -- "Such other duties as the President may direct." In addition to its primary duties Marines support missions at the White House and for the State Department. "As we continue to fight terrorism across the globe, the U.S. Marines remain at the forefront, steadfast in their resolve, and indeed committed to making a difference," said Marine Gen. Peter Pace, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in a letter to Marines. "I applaud the tremendous dedication of all our Marines, serving at home and in every clime and place. "On behalf of the Joint Chiefs, the men and women of the Armed Forces, and a grateful Nation, Happy Birthday to the U.S. Marine Corps."
