Mountain Home may help train Singapore Airmen

Air Force and Singapore officials are negotiating to bring up to 10 Singapore F-15 Eagles to Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho, and establish a training squadron there.

Stand-up of the squadron depends upon the successful completion of an environmental analysis required under the National Environmental Policy Act, and negotiations between the two air forces, said Maj. Damien Pickart, chief of public affairs for the 366th Fighter Wing.

The major said the assessment should be completed by March 2007. No date has been set for the standup of the squadron.

Mountain Home is going through Base Realignment and Closure actions and will lose its fleet of F-16 Fighting Falcons and F-15C Eagles.  In return, it will gain F-15E Strike Eagles from Elmendorf AFB, Alaska, said Major Pickart.

"We will have two squadrons of identical airframes here versus three different airframes," the major said. "This will, basically, streamline operations and save money for the Air Force."

Singapore is a key strategic partner of the United States, Major Pickart said, and the opportunity to host a Singaporean squadron provides an opportunity to build Airmen-to-Airmen relationships as they work, train and fly together.

The move also will give Airmen and their families there an opportunity to learn each others' cultures and develop lasting friendships, the major said.
