CENTAF releases airpower summary for Oct. 23 Published Oct. 23, 2006 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) -- U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials have released the airpower summary for Oct. 23.In Afghanistan Oct. 22, an Air Force B-1 Lancer and Royal Air Force Harrier GR-7s provided close-air support for International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF, troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Garmsir. The B-1 expended a Guided Bomb Unit-38 and the GR-7s expended a rocket and a 540-pound bomb on enemy positions. An Air Force B-1 provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Mangratay. The B-1 expended GBU-31s on enemy positions.An Air Force B-1 and RAF GR-7s provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Gereshk. The B-1 expended a GBU-38 and the GR-7s expended rockets and a 540-pound bomb on enemy positions. An Air Force B-1 provided close-air support for ISAF troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Lwara Dasta. The B-1 expended GBU-31s on enemy positions. In total, 35 close-air-support missions were flown in support of ISAF and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols. Additionally, seven U.S. and RAF intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan. In Iraq, Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons, Navy F/A-18Cs and RAF Tornado GR-4s provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Baghdad. Air Force F-16s also provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Samarra, Rumalijah and Al Hawija. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces in the southern part of Baghdad. In total, coalition aircraft flew 38 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities. Additionally, 21 Air Force, Navy, Army and RAF ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. They flew 150 airlift sorties, delivered 435 tons of cargo and transported 4,800 passengers were transported. Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada and Korea flew in support of OIF or OEF. On Oct. 21, U.S., RAF and French air force tankers flew 33 sorties and off-loaded almost 2.2 million pounds of fuel.
