CENTAF releases airpower summary for Oct. 22

SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) --  U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials released the airpower summary for Oct. 22.
In Afghanistan Oct. 21, U.S. Air Force A-10s Thunderbolt IIs provided close-air support for International Security Assistance Force troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Bar Kanday. The A-10s fired cannon rounds on enemy positions.

U.S. Air Force A-10s provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Garmsir. The A-10s dropped a general-purpose 500-pound bomb and fired cannon rounds on enemy positions.

In total, 37 close-air support missions were flown in support of ISAF and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Additionally, eight U.S. Air Force and Royal Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.

In Iraq, U.S. Marine Corps AV-8Bs conducted a strike against anti-Iraqi forces near Ramadi. The AV-8Bs fired cannon rounds on enemy targets.

U.S. Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons, U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles and U.S. Marine Corps F/A-18Cs provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Baghdad.

U.S. Air Force F-16s provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Al Musayyib and Tikrit.

U.S. Air Force F-15Es provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Qal'at Rashid ar Rawt.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 38 close-air support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. They included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Additionally, 18 U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, Royal Air Force and Royal Australian Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq.

On Oct. 20, U.S. Air Force rescue and medical crews on HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters flew a medical evacuation mission in support of OEF. One Afghan local national with injuries requiring urgent care was evacuated as a result of this mission.

U.S. Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. They flew more than 150 airlift sorties, delivered 430 tons of cargo and transported 4,800 passengers.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia flew in support of OIF or OEF.

On Oct. 20, U.S. Air Force, Royal Air Force, French Air Force and Singaporean Air Force tankers flew 37 sorties and off-loaded more than 2.3 million pounds of fuel.
