CENTAF releases airpower summary for Oct. 17 Published Oct. 17, 2006 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) -- U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials have released the airpower summary for Oct. 17.In Afghanistan Oct. 16, Navy F/A-18 Hornets conducted a strike against Taliban extremists near Band-e Kajaki. The F/A-18s expended Guided Bomb Unit-12s on enemy targets. Navy F/A-18s provided close-air support to International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF, troops in contact with enemy forces near Akhtaro Kalay. The F/A-18s expended a GBU-38 on an enemy position. Navy F/A-18s and Royal Air Force Harrier GR-7s provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Band-e Kajaki. The F/A-18s expended a GBU-12s and the GR-7s expended an Enhanced Paveway II munition on enemy positions. In total, 34 close-air support missions were flown in support of ISAF and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols. Additionally, nine U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy and Royal Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan. In Iraq, Marine Corps F/A-18s provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Miqdadiya, Baghdad, Al Yusufiyah and Al Muhmudiya. RAF Tornado GR-4s provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Baghdad. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Al Mada'in. In total, coalition aircraft flew 45 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities. Additionally, 17 Air Force, Navy, Army and RAF ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. They flew 110 airlift sorties, delivered 210 tons of cargo and transported 2,750 passengers. Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada and South Korea flew in support of OIF or OEF. On Oct. 15, U.S., RAF and French air force tankers flew 34 sorties and off-loaded more than 2.2 million pounds of fuel.
