CENTAF releases airpower summary for Oct. 13

U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials have released the airpower summary for Oct. 13. 

In Afghanistan Oct. 12, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs, an Air Force B-1B Lancer and Royal Air Force GR-7 Harriers provided close-air support for International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF, troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Salamkhan. The A-10s expended guided bomb unit-12s and cannon rounds; the B-1B expended a GBU-38, and the GR-7s expended Enhanced Paveway IIs and rockets on enemy positions. 

RAF GR-7s provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Band-e Kajaki. The GR-7s expended EPW IIs on enemy positions.

An Air Force B-1B provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Lwara Dasta. The B-1B expended GBU-38s on enemy positions.

An Air Force B-1B and Air Force A-10s provided close-air support for ISAF troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Tirgaran. The A-10s expended cannon rounds on enemy positions.

Air Force A-10s provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Gangikhel.

In total, 51 close-air-support missions were flown in support of ISAF and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Additionally, 12 Air Force, Navy and Royal RAF intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.

In Iraq, Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Bayji.

Air Force F-16s and U.S. Marine Corps F/A-18s provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Baqubeh. The F/A-18s also provided close-air support to troops in contact near Mosul.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 51 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Additionally, 16 Air Force, Navy, Army, RAF and Royal Australian Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq.

On Oct. 11, Air Force rescue and medical crews on HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters flew three medical evacuation missions in support of OEF. Three Afghan National Army soldiers and four local national children with injuries requiring urgent care were evacuated as a result of these missions.

Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. Nearly 130 airlift sorties were flown; more than 500 tons of cargo was delivered, and more than 2,200 passengers were transported.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada, Japan and South Korea flew in support of OIF or OEF.

On Oct. 11, Air Force, RAF and Singaporean tankers flew 37 sorties and off-loaded over 2.4 million pounds of fuel.
