CENTAF releases airpower summary for Oct. 12 and monthly airpower overview Published Oct. 12, 2006 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) -- In Afghanistan Oct. 11, U.S. Navy F/A-18 Hornets provided close air support for International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF, troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Lwara Dasta. The F/A-18s expended a guided bomb unit-12 on an enemy position. Navy F/A-18s and Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Shuhika. The F/A-18s expended GBU-12s and a GBU-38 on enemy positions. The F/A-18s also provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Mandagel Sufla. Air Force A-10s provided close-air support for ISAF troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Bar Kanday and Sado Kala. Royal Air Force GR-7Harriers provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Mangratay. In total, 48 close-air-support missions were flown in support of ISAF and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols. Additionally, nine Air Force and RAF intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan. In Iraq, U.S. Marine Corps F/A-18s conducted a strike against anti-Iraqi forces near Qazwan. The aircraft expended a Maverick missile on an enemy target. Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Balad and Baghdad. Marine Corps F/A-18s provided close air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Baghdad. In total, coalition aircraft flew 44 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities. Additionally, 19 Air Force, Navy, UArmy and RAF ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. More than 150 airlift sorties were flown; more than 550 tons of cargo was delivered, and more than 3,600 passengers were transported. This included about 8,000 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in eastern Afghanistan. Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada, Japan and South Korea flew in support of OIF or OEF. On Oct. 10, Air Force, RAF and French tankers flew 37 sorties and off-loaded more than 2.5 million pounds of fuel.
