Four NCOs are in serious or critical condition after their car slammed into a tree in a village near Royal Air Force Lakenheath, England.

Injured in the Oct. 7 crash were:

Tech. Sgt. Michael Schoenly of the 48th Logistics Readiness Squadron,
Tech. Sgt. Will Stimpson of the 56th Rescue Squadron,
Tech. Sgt. Douglas Musser of the 56th RQS, and
Staff Sgt. Robert Bucci of the 56th RQS.

The four Airmen -- two who are in critical and two in stable condition -- are all from units at the F-15 Strike Eagle fighter base some 70 miles northeast of London.

Three of the Airmen are in West Suffolk Hospital, in Bury St. Edmunds -- about 30 miles southeast of the base, said Capt. Beth Horine, base spokesperson. The fourth Airman is at Addenbrooks Hospital in Cambridge, which is about 30 miles southwest of the base.

The one-car crash occurred in the village of Lakenheath, Captain Horine said. The cause of the accident is still unknown, she said.

Roads outside the base are, for the most part, narrow and wind through villages and the East Anglia countryside. There are hazards associated with driving on these kinds of roads that many Americans do not deal with when driving back home.

All newcomers to the base must pass a driving test before they can drive, the captain said.

After the accident, 48th Fighter Wing Safety Office officials announced it will start a weekly United Kingdom driving familiarization course beginning Oct. 20.

"It's a two-hour course, with both classroom and driving time, to help familiarize Airmen on driving behavior and hazards in the areas -- and risk assessment," Captain Horine said.

The wing, dubbed the Liberty Wing, has nearly 5,700 active-duty servicemembers and 2,000 British and U.S. civilians. It is the biggest U.S. Air Forces in Europe base in England.
