CENTAF releases airpower summary for Oct. 11

U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials have released the airpower summary for Oct. 11.

In Afghanistan Oct. 10, Navy F/A-18 Hornets provided close-air support for International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF, troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Now Zad. The F/A-18s expended guided bomb unit-12s on enemy positions.

Navy F/A-18s provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Eshqabad. The F/A-18s expended GBU-12s and a GBU-38 on enemy positions.

An Air Force B-1 Lancer provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Babajhey. The B-1 expended GBU-31s on enemy positions.

An Air Force B-1 and Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs provided close-air support for ISAF troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Alqehdari Nekan. The A-10s also provided close-air support to troops in contact near Bar Kanday.

Navy F/A-18s provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Now Zad and Lwara Dasta.

In total, 42 close-air support missions were flown in support of ISAF and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Additionally, eight Air Force and Royal Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.

In Iraq, an Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon and an MQ-1 Air Force Predator conducted a strike against anti-Iraqi forces near Ramadi. The F-16 expended a GBU-12 and the Predator expended Hellfire missiles on the enemy targets. Marine Corps AV-8B Harriers conducted a strike against anti-Iraqi forces near Qazwan. The AV-8B expended cannon rounds on the enemy targets.

Marine Corps F/A-18s provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Balad.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 41 close-air support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Additionally, 18 Air Force, Army and Royal Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq.

On Oct. 9, Air Force rescue and medical crews on HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters flew a medical evacuation mission in support of OEF. One Afghan National Army soldier, with injuries requiring urgent care, was evacuated as a result of this mission.

Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. They flew 150 airlift sorties, delivered 610 tons of cargo and transported 3,340 passengers.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada, Japan and Korea flew in support of OIF or OEF.

On Oct. 9, Air Force, RAF, French and Singaporean air force tankers flew 39 sorties and off-loaded more than 2.5 million pounds of fuel.
