CENTAF releases airpower summaries for Oct. 7 and 8 Published Oct. 9, 2006 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) -- U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials have released the airpower summary for Oct. 7 and 8 Oct. 7 In Afghanistan Oct. 6, Royal Air Force GR-7 Harriers conducted strikes against enemy forces near Now Zad. The GR-7s expended a general-purpose 500-pound bomb on an enemy position. An Air Force B-1B Lancer provided close-air support for International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF, troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Kawre Ghar. A Royal Air Force GR-7 provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Sangin. An Air Force B-1B provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Garmsir. The B1-B expended guided bomb unit-38s and GBU-31s on enemy positions. RAF GR-7s provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Now Zad. The GR-7s expended rockets on enemy positions. An Air Force B-1B provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Shenadan. U.S. Navy F/A-18 Hornets provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Dabar. The F/A-18s expended GBU-12s on enemy positions. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Shami Chah and Shurakian. In total, 44 close-air-support missions were flown in support of ISAF and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols. Additionally, four Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan. In Iraq , an Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon conducted a strike against anti-Iraqi forces near Ramadi. The F-16 expended a GBU-12 on an enemy target. Air Force F-16s provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Bayji and Baghdad. U.S. Marine Corps F/A-18s provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Karbala and Samarra . Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Basrah. In total, coalition aircraft flew 42 close-air support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities. Additionally, 17 Air Force, Army and RAF ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. Air Force fighter aircraft performed in non-traditional ISR roles with their electro-optical and infrared sensors. On Oct. 5, Air Force rescue and medical crews on HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters flew a medical evacuation mission in support of OEF. Three Afghan National Army soldiers with injuries requiring urgent care were evacuated as a result of this mission. Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. About 140 airlift sorties were flown; nearly 235 tons of cargo were delivered, and about 2,770 passengers were transported. This included about 15,000 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in eastern Afghanistan. Coalition C-130 crews from Australia , Canada and Japan flew in support of OIF or OEF. On Oct. 5, Air Force, RAF, French and Singaporean tankers flew 37 sorties and off-loaded almost 2.4 million pounds of fuel. Oct. 8 In Afghanistan Oct. 7, an Air Force B-1B conducted a strike against an enemy position near Gereshk. The B-1B expended GBU-38s on the enemy targets. Air Force A-10s, a B-1B, Navy F/A-18s and RAF GR-7s provided close-air support for International Security Assistance Force troops in contact with Taliban extremists in the vicinity of Regal. The A-10s expended GBU-12s, general-purpose 500-pound bombs and cannon rounds; the B-1B expended GBU-31s; the F/A-18Fs expended GBU-12s and cannon rounds; and the GR-7s expended general-purpose 500-pound bombs, Enhanced Paveway IIs and rockets on enemy positions. United States Air Force A-10s and U.S. Navy F/A-18Cs provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Now Zad. The A-10s also provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact near Kajaki 'Ulya. In total, 51 close-air-support missions were flown to support to ISAF and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols. Additionally, five Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan. In Iraq, an Air Force Predator and U.S. Marine Corps F/A-18s conducted strikes against anti-Iraqi forces near Fallujah. The Predator expended a Hellfire missile and the F/A-18s expended a Maverick missile and cannon rounds on enemy targets. Air Force F-15Es provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Ad Diwaniyah, and RAF GR-4 Tornados provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces in the vicinity of Basrah. In total, coalition aircraft flew 42 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom.
