CENTAF releases airpower summary for Oct. 6

U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials have released the airpower summary for Oct. 6.

In Afghanistan Oct. 5, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs and Royal Air Force GR-7 Harriers provided close-air support for International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF, troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Gereshk. The GR-7s expended rockets on enemy positions.

An Air Force B-1B Lancer and RAF GR-7s provided close-air support for ISAF troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Qaryeh-ye Barang. The GR-7s expended an enhanced Paveway II munition on an enemy position. 

RAF GR-7s and U.S. Navy F/A-18 Hornets provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Now Zad. The GR-7s expended EPW IIs on enemy positions.

RAF GR-7s and an Air Force B-1B provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near De Cagay Ghar. 

RAF GR-7s provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Garmabak.

Air Force B-1Bs provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Khayl-e Sufla and Armah.

French M-2000 Mirages provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Hesarak-e Sofla.

U.S. Marine Corps F/A-18s provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Aranas.

Air Force A-10s provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Malaksay.

In total, 43 close-air-support missions were flown in support of ISAF and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Additionally, four U.S. Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.

In Iraq, Marine Corps F/A-18s conducted a strike against anti-Iraqi forces near Ramadi. The F/A-18s expended a guided bomb unit-12 on an enemy target.

Marine Corps F/A-18s provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Basrah.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 43 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Additionally, 16 Air Force, Navy, Army and RAF ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. Air Force fighter aircraft performed in non-traditional ISR roles with their electro-optical and infrared sensors.

Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. Some 135 airlift sorties were flown; about 355 tons of cargo was delivered, and nearly 3,115 passengers were transported. This included about 5,300 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in eastern Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada and Japan flew in support of OIF or OEF.

On Oct. 4, Air Force, RAF, French and Singaporean tankers flew 37 sorties and off-loaded almost 2.5 million pounds of fuel.
