CENTAF releases airpower summaries for Sept. 23-25

U.S. Central Command Air Forces have released the airpower summaries for Sept. 23 to 25.

Sept. 23
In Afghanistan Sept. 22, Navy F/A-18Fs conducted a strike against Taliban extremists near Lashkar Gah. The F/A-18Fs expended Guided Bomb Unit-12s on enemy targets.

Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs and a B-1 Lancer provided close-air support for coalition troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Gereshk. The A-10s made passes and expended general purpose 500-pound bombs, GBU-12s and cannon rounds on enemy positions.

Navy F/A-18Fs, F/A-18Cs and Royal Air Force Harrier GR-7s provided close-air support for coalition troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Chanbarak Ghar. The F/A-18Fs expended GBU-12s on enemy positions.

Air Force A-10s and Navy F/A-18Cs provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with enemy forces near Serwa; A-10s and Navy F/A-18Fs provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with enemy forces near Mowshkheyl.

The following close air support requests supported NATO forces operating as the International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF, in Afghanistan.

RAF GR-7s, an Air Force B-1 and Navy F/A-18Fs provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Garmsir. The B-1 expended GBU-31s and a GBU-38 on enemy locations.

RAF GR-7s and Air Force A-10s provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Now Zad. The GR-7s expended an enhanced Paveway II munition on an enemy location.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 46 close-air-support missions in support of OEF or ISAF. These missions included support to coalition, Afghan and ISAF troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Additionally, six Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.

In Iraq, Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons conducted a strike against anti-Iraqi forces near Baghdad. The F-16s expended GBU-38s, GBU-12s and cannon rounds on enemy targets.

Air Force F-16s provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Baghdad and Iskandariyah, and RAF Tornado GR-4s provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Basrah.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 42 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Additionally, 15 Air Force, Navy and RAF ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq.

Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. They flew 170 airlift sorties, delivered 480 tons of cargo and transported 3,430 passengers. This included more than 28,000 pounds of troop resupply airdropped in eastern Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada and Japan flew in support of OIF or OEF.

On Sept. 21, U.S., French, RAF and Singapore air force tankers flew 40 sorties and off-loaded more than 2.5 million pounds of fuel.

Sept. 24
In Afghanistan Sept. 23, RAF GR-7s conducted a strike against Taliban extremists near Ghanzi. The GR-7s made passes and expended general-purpose 500-pound bombs and rockets on enemy targets.

Air Force A-10s, a B-1 and RAF GR-7s provided close-air support for coalition troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Disi Ghar. The A-10s made passes and expended general-purpose 500-pound bombs, a GBU-12 and cannon rounds; the B-1 expended GBU-31s and GBU-38s and the GR-7s expended a general-purpose 500-pound bomb on enemy positions.

An Air Force B-1 also provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with enemy forces near Bez Bel.

Air Force A-10s also provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with enemy forces near Tagab. The A-10s made passes and expended cannon rounds on enemy positions.

The following close air support requests supported NATO forces operating as the ISAF in Afghanistan.

RAF GR-7s provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Garmsir.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 38 close-air support missions in support of OEF or ISAF. These missions included support to coalition, Afghan and ISAF troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Additionally, six Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.

In Iraq, Marine Corps F/A-18Cs and Air Force F-16s provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Al Musayyib. F/A-18Cs also provided close-air support to troops in contact with enemy forces near Al Iskandariyah and Al Mansuriyah.

RAF GR-4s provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Basrah.

Air Force F-16s provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Tikrit.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 38 close-air-support missions for OIF. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Additionally, 13 Air Force, Navy and Royal Australian Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. Navy fighter aircraft performed in non-traditional ISR roles with their electro-optical and infrared sensors.

Air Force rescue and medical crews on HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters flew two medical evacuation missions in support of OEF Sept. 22. Three local nationals with injuries requiring urgent care were evacuated as a result of these missions.

Air Force C-130s and C-17s provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. They flew 160 airlift sorties, delivered 600 tons of cargo and transported 3,165 passengers. This included more than 16,600 pounds of troop resupply airdropped in eastern Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia and South Korea flew in support of OIF or OEF.

On Sept. 22, U.S., French and RAF tankers flew 40 sorties and off-loaded more than 2.4 million pounds of fuel. 

Sept. 25
In Afghanistan Sept. 24, Air Force A-10s and Navy F/A-18Cs provided close-air support for coalition troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Tarak. The A-10s and F/A-18Cs expended GBU-12s and cannon rounds on enemy positions.

Air Force A-10s provided close-air support for coalition troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Aranas and Hazarkhel.

RAF GR-7s provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with enemy forces near Deh Rawood.

The following close-air support requests supported NATO forces operating as the ISAF in Afghanistan.

Navy F/A-18Cs provided close-air support for coalition troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Aranas.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 37 close-air support missions in support of OEF or ISAF. These missions included support to coalition, Afghan and ISAF troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Additionally, five Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.

In Iraq, Air Force F-16s provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Tall Afar.

RAF GR-4s provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Basrah and Baghdad.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 37 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Additionally, 16 Air Force, Navy, Army and RAF ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. Air Force fighter aircraft performed in non-traditional ISR roles with its electro-optical and infrared sensors.
