The Military Affairs Committee of the Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce gave a special "Salute to the Military" Sept. 20.

The event, the 23rd annual Santa Maria Barbecue, included a roast beef dinner, live music and a chance for military members and their families to socialize and interact with the civilians in the committee who help make Cheyenne a home for them.

Events like the Santa Maria Barbecue provide the nation's servicemembers a great opportunity to get involved in their local communities and build important relationships, said Col. Michael Carey, 90th Space Wing commander.

"The MAC-sponsored Santa Maria Barbecue is a longstanding tradition wherein the community recognizes our contributions to the nation's defense and the social fabric of Cheyenne," said Colonel Carey. "We heartily welcome and appreciate their neighborly gesture. There's nothing like living the legend of Cheyenne."

Volunteers from the MAC and the Cheyenne Kiwanis Club took part in hosting the event, of which planning began in detail in June, said Rolinda Sample of the MAC.

About 425 attendees were fed at the 2005 event, and 580 people attended this year's event.

"Everyone knows what it means to the community to be involved with local military members," said Tom Elsberry, event chairman and second-year chief cook. "There's nothing our people wouldn't do for them, and I'm glad to see Cheyenne is doing this."
