CENTAF releases airpower summary for Sept. 21 Published Sept. 21, 2006 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) -- U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials have released the airpower summary for Sept. 21.In Afghanistan Sept. 20, an Air Force B-1 Lancer and U.S. Marine Corps AV-8Bs provided close-air support for coalition troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Asmar. The B-1 expended a Guided Bomb Unit-31 and the AV-8Bs expended GBU-12s on enemy positions. Navy F/A-18Cs, F/A-18Fs and Royal Air Force Harrier GR-7s provided close-air support for coalition troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Deh Rawood. The F/A-18Cs and F/A-18Fs made passes and expended GBU-12s and cannon rounds on enemy positions. The GR-7s made passes and expended enhanced Paveway IIs, general purpose 500-pound bombs and rockets on enemy positions. The following close air support requests supported NATO forces operating as the International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF, in Afghanistan. RAF GR-7s, Marine Corps AV-8Bs, Navy F/A-18Fs and Air Force A-10s provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Sangin. The GR-7s expended an EPW II and the AV-8Bs expended GBU-12s on enemy positions. Additionally, six Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan. In total, coalition aircraft flew 55 close-air-support missions in support of OEF or ISAF. These missions included support to coalition, Afghan and ISAF troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols. In Iraq, U.S. Air Force F-16s provided close air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces in the vicinity of Kirkuk and Al Mahmudiyah. RAF Tornado GR-4s, Marine Corps F/A-18Cs provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Baghdad. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Al Basrah and Najaf. Marine Corps F/A-18Cs provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Tikrit. Additionally, 18 Air Force, Army, Royal Australian Air Force and RAF ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. In total, coalition aircraft flew 45 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities. On Sept. 19, Air Force rescue and medical crews on HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters flew a medical evacuation mission in support of OEF. One local national child with injuries requiring urgent care was evacuated as a result of this mission. Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. They flew 150 airlift sorties were flown, delivered 235 tons of cargo and transported 3,750 passengers. Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada and Japan flew in support of OIF or OEF. On Sept. 19, U.S., French, RAF and Republic of Singapore Air Force tankers flew 41 sorties and off-loaded more than 2.4 million pounds of fuel.
