CENTAF releases airpower summary for Sept. 13

U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials have released the airpower summary for Sept. 13.

In Afghanistan Sept. 12, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs provided close-air support for coalition troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Kandahar. The aircraft expended Guided Bomb Unit-12s and cannon rounds on enemy positions, ending the engagement.

French Air Force M-2000 Mirages provided close-air support for coalition troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Shkin.

Navy F-18 Hornets also provided close-air support for coalition troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Kandahar and Ghazni.

Marine Corps AV-8Bs provided close-air support for coalition troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Moqor.

The following close-air-support requests supported NATO forces operating as the International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF, in Afghanistan.

An Air Force B-1 Lancer, A-10s, Marine Corps AV-8Bs, Royal Air Force Harrier GR-7s and French M-2000s provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Lashkar Gah. The B-1 expended GBU-38s and GBU-31s. The GR-7s expended rockets, enhanced Paveway II munitions and a general-purpose 540-pound bomb. The A-10s expended a GBU-12 and cannon rounds. All munitions were expended on enemy positions, ending the engagement.

A-10s provided close-air support for ISAF troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Kandahar. The A-10s expended a GBU-12 and cannon rounds on enemy positions, ending the engagement. A-10s also provided close-air support for ISAF troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Now Zad.

Navy F-18s provided close-air support for ISAF troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Now Zad. The F-18s conducted passes, expending cannon rounds and a GBU-12 on enemy locations, ending the engagement.

RAF GR-7s also provided close-air support for ISAF troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Qalat and Musah Qal'eh. Marine Corps AV-8Bs also provided close-air support for ISAF troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Musah Qal'eh.

Additionally, six Air Force and Navy intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 42 close-air-support missions in support of either OEF or ISAF. These missions included support to coalition, Afghan and ISAF troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

In Iraq, Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons and RAF Tornado GR-4s provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Al Iskandariyah.

F-16s also provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Baghdad.

Additionally, 18 Air Force, Navy, Army and RAF ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. Air Force fighter aircraft performed two non-traditional ISR roles with their electro-optical and infrared sensors.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 42 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. They flew 180 airlift sorties, delivered 590 tons of cargo and transported 4,100 passengers.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Japan and Korea flew in support of OIF or OEF.

On Sept. 11, Air Force, French and RAF tankers flew 40 sorties and off-loaded more than 2.5 million pounds of fuel.
