CENTAF releases airpower summary for Aug. 22

U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials have released the airpower summary for Aug. 22.

In Afghanistan Aug. 21, an Air Force B-1B Lancer provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with anti-coalition forces near Musah Qal'eh. The B-1B expended guided bomb unit 31s and GBU-38s on enemy mortar positions, ending the engagement. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs and Royal Air Force GR-7 Harriers also provided close-air support to coalition troops in the vicinity of Musah Qal'eh.

An Air Force B-1B provided close air support to coalition troops in contact with anti-coalition forces in the vicinity of Now Zad. The aircraft expended a GBU-31 and a GBU-38 on enemy troop positions, ending the engagement.

Air Force A-10s provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with enemy forces in the vicinity of Asadabad. The aircraft expended cannon rounds and general-purpose 500-pound bombs against enemy troop positions, ending the engagement.

Air Force B-1Bs also provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with anti-coalition forces in the vicinity of Kandahar, and Air Force A-10s provided close air support to coalition troops near Khowst.

Royal Air Force GR-7s provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with anti-coalition forces in the vicinity of Tarin Kowt.

Additionally, seven Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 26 close-air-support missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. These missions included support to coalition and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

In Iraq, Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces in the vicinities of Al Hawijah and Baghdad, and Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles provided close air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces in the vicinities of Al Mahmudiyah and Mosul.

Additionally, 11 Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 42 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

On Aug. 20, an Air Force rescue and medical crew on an HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter flew one medical evacuation mission in support of OEF. An Afghan national army patient with injuries requiring urgent care was evacuated as a result of this mission.

Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. Approximately 145 airlift sorties were flown; almost 335 tons of cargo were delivered, and some 3,050 passengers were transported. This included more than 59,000 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in southeastern Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia and Canada flew in support of either OIF or OEF.

On Aug. 20, Air Force, Royal Air Force and French air force tankers flew 40 sorties and off-loaded almost 2.3 million pounds of fuel.
