CENTAF releases airpower summary for Aug. 11 Published Aug. 11, 2006 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) -- U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials have released the airpower summary for Aug. 11.In Afghanistan Aug. 10, an Air Force B-1 Lancer and Royal Air Force GR-7s provided close-air support for coalition troops taking small arms fire from Taliban extremists near Oruzgan. The B-1B expended guided bombs on the extremists' positions, ending the engagement. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs provided close-air support for coalition troops in contact with anti-coalition forces near Orgun-E. The A-10s conducted passes, expending cannon rounds and general-purpose 500-pound bombs on enemy mortar positions, ending the engagement. A-10s also provided close-air support for coalition troops in contact with anti-coalition forces near Jalalabad. The A-10s conducted passes, expending cannon rounds on an enemy mortar position, destroying the target and ending the engagement. A U.S. B-1B provided close air support to Coalition troops in contact with enemy forces in the vicinity of Musah Qal'eh. The B-1B expended GBU-31s and 38s on enemy positions and an enemy vehicle, destroying the targets and ending the engagement. French Air Force Mirages provided close-air support for coalition troops in contact with anti-coalition forces near Tarin Kowt. A-10s also provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with enemy forces near Khowst and Musah Qal'eh. Additionally, nine U.S., Royal Air Force and French Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan. In total, coalition aircraft flew 28 close-air support missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. These missions included support to coalition and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols. In Iraq, 12 Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. In total, coalition aircraft flew 47 close-air support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities. On Aug. 9, an Air Force rescue and medical crew on a HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter flew one medical evacuation mission in support of OEF. The crew evacuated two coalition military members with injuries requiring urgent care. Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. The flew 150 airlift sorties, delivered almost 380 tons of cargo and transported 2,640 passengers. This included 29,800 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in eastern Afghanistan. Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada, Japan and Korea flew in support of either OIF or OEF. On Aug. 9, U.S., Royal Air Force and French Air Force tankers flew 41 sorties and off-loaded more than 2.8 million pounds of fuel.
